Comparing the Yueju to Xiangju's (xiamen's) version, both have their good and bad points. Yueju's opening rather grand, so many ppl flooding into the Yang family, but then it's simply an orgy of colours, yet everyone, especially the shengs, all looked more or less the same, can't see any style or character of their own. Xiangju's version is better, each son-in-law is dressed differently, and the difference in their character can be seen and felt, but then the way they were introduced into the scene was too mechanical, as Mrs Yang seemed like a foreign lady who had just started learning Chinese and could only say "难得他一片孝心啊"... hee...

In the Yueju version, there is one part I don't quite understand.. in opening of scene 4, the second daughter was like happily playing with the parrot in her home. Being a very materialistic woman, won't she be worried that the fall of her maternal family might indirectly drag them down as well? In this part, I think the Xiangju's version made it looked more logical by making her walking up and down frstratedly in her house.
